How to Sum Across Multiple Sheets in Google Sheets
Add the same cell from each tab: =Jan!B2+Feb!B2+Mar!B2. For a whole range, sum each sheet's range and add them.
=Jan!B2+Feb!B2+Mar!B2
Reference each tab by name followed by an exclamation mark and the cell. Rename Jan/Feb/Mar to your tab names.
How it works
Google Sheets has no single 3D SUM across tabs, so you reference each sheet explicitly. For one cell you add them with plus signs; for a range you sum each sheet's range and add the totals. Tab names with spaces must be wrapped in single quotes, like 'Q1 data'!B2. Keeping identical layouts on every tab makes this reliable.
Variations
Sum a range from each tab
=SUM(Jan!B2:B20)+SUM(Feb!B2:B20)+SUM(Mar!B2:B20)
Each SUM handles one tab; the results are added together.
Tab name with a space
='Q1 data'!B2+'Q2 data'!B2
Single quotes around the name are required when it contains spaces.
Pull a running cross-tab total onto a summary sheet
=SUM(Jan:Mar!B2)
Some sheets support this range-of-tabs syntax; if it errors, fall back to adding each tab.
Examples
| Scenario | Formula |
|---|---|
| Monthly totals from three tabs | =SUM(Jan!B2:B20)+SUM(Feb!B2:B20)+SUM(Mar!B2:B20) |
| One figure from each quarter tab | =Q1!B2+Q2!B2+Q3!B2+Q4!B2 |
FAQ
Is there a 3D SUM across all tabs at once?
Not reliably. Sum each tab's range and add them, or reference each cell with plus signs.
How do I reference a tab whose name has a space?
Wrap the name in single quotes: ='Q1 data'!B2.
What if the tabs don't have the same layout?
Line up the ranges first. Mismatched layouts are the usual cause of wrong cross-tab totals.
