SUMIF vs SUMIFS in Google Sheets
Short answer: Use SUMIF for a single condition and SUMIFS the moment you need two or more. Watch the argument order — it's reversed between them, which is the #1 cause of wrong totals.
Copy the one most people want (SUMIFS)
=SUMIFS(C:C, A:A, "East", B:B, ">100")
Sum column C where region (A) is East AND value (B) is over 100. SUMIFS scales to as many condition pairs as you need.

Which one should you use?
Use SUMIF when…
You have a single test — "sum sales where region = East". It's shorter and the classic choice for one rule.
Use SUMIFS when…
You have two or more tests that all must be true — region AND month, status AND owner, date range with a category. Also use SUMIFS when you think more conditions might be added later.
Same task, both formulas
Total the amount in column C for the East region.
=SUMIF(A:A, "East", C:C)
=SUMIFS(C:C, A:A, "East")
Identical result for one condition. Notice the sum column (C) is last in SUMIF but first in SUMIFS — mixing this up silently returns wrong numbers.
FAQ
Can SUMIFS do OR conditions?
No. SUMIFS combines every condition with AND. For OR, add two SUMIFS results together or use SUMPRODUCT.
Why does my SUMIFS return 0?
Almost always the argument order — SUMIFS wants the sum range first. Also check that text criteria match exactly and numbers aren't stored as text.
Is SUMIFS slower than SUMIF?
Not meaningfully on typical sheets. Use whichever matches the number of conditions.
